J. Brahms, Intermezzo Op.117#2, 1886 Steinway B
After 4 hours of work on hammers and action my piano technician declared the piano as ready and after tuning ti, I am happy to present my 136 year old beauty to you as an extraordinary instrument.
It would never have turned this way without the superb technicians who spent numerous hours on bringing a tattered old Steinway back to life.

Recorded on an 1886 Steinway B with 3 different Olympus cameras: OM-D EM1, EM1 MarkII, EM5 Mark II and a Oneplus 5 mobile phone. Stitched into a previous single camera version and a new audio track from two cardioid NT5 Røde condensers in NOS-set up. Editet in kdenlive, a truly outrageously beautiful piece of video editing software. Upload to youtube was done with a 60MB mp4 with X265/HEVC and ...

'Redukt' as a meditative addition to their main program. Never mind the video, it's a mobile phone after all, (Still, it's not vertical video and it's post-processed with image stabilization but the audio is actually quite good, that is, after people around stopped talking about stupid stuff.) In the end, it's the band only - and it's one of those goose bump moments in your life. Glad I was the...

This is an interesting instrument: An 1892 Bösendorfer 280, predecessor to the 'Imperial' with added notes down to F0. Original was with a Viennese action, replaced with a modern Renner-like action. This was the first time I tuned a piano different from my own grand, on which I taught myself tuning within about one year. I am mightily proud that the owner actually asked me to tune the huge beas...

What a rare treat! This piano is even 1 year older than my own Steinway B and it now belongs to friend, a piano technician, who actually was the first to tune my on piano when it arrived here.

Strictly WorkInProgress - ever since I started working on it and I guess that won't ever change. Recorded with an Olympus OM-D E5MarkII for video and support audio with two dynamic omni capsules and a pair of Røde NT5 cardioid as main min microphones. Downmix on audacity and final video version with ffmpeg. Thank you, Free Software!

A rare find: An 1893 Steinway B in pristine condition, even with its original set of hammers. Original shellack surface, ivory keys, all action parts. Will re-visit the piano to give it a full tuning and get my personal hero piano technician to do some voicing on the hammers. Quite a surprise find and while it's not a steal pricewise, I am tempted to buy it, because by now I know that Bs from t...
Brahms Op. 117 - Bechstein 220cm from 1900

Quick run through without editing on a modernized Bechstein model IV, just recently superbly voiced. Audio comes from to mini capsules directly into the camera. Yes, the Brahms is still work in progress - and it probably never leave that status.

Recorded with Rode NT5 Cardioids in NOS-configuration (90° and 30cm) plus a distant omnidirectional pair of dynamic microphone for ambience. Rachmaninoff Moment Musical Op.16#5 on a horrible piano
Nice playing too!
It sounds gorgeous...
Incredible unique cadenza!
I know this is a piano masterpiece, but I want an orchestral version so bad.
Great performance!!!! I’m in tears
This is unbelievable.
Back in the "good old days" (pre 1994) Bechstein concert grands sounded just fine without the duplex scale
I had time to listen to both parts of this recital just today. Superb Zhukov playing here, with both the Scriabin and Chopin. The latter's Sonata #3 is astounding here (despite the video glitches). Thank you, Peter, for being the archivist of Maestro Zhukov's television performances. I'm off to view the December 1997 Moscow recital.
What a gem! Thank you for posting.
Make Wooden Dildos Great Again!
Exquise...
I wonder if the symphony would have sounded different if Maestro Sanderling's collar had been turned down.
Piano is an amazing instrument, can transmit a whole range of emotions, im still discovering some trough listening to music now at 40 years at age
Мастер! !!
Bingo
He did the optional note at the end!!
Very nice. I've got one from 1872-3 (serial# 5771). Full size, straight-strung, too. Less reinforcing on the frame, sound is more brittle / bell-like, but great clarity. It would be interesting to compare them.
Fantastico a dir poco, non sapevo di questa meraviglia fino ieri
Hi Peter, Very nice sound and good performance. What model is it, and who restored it?
Nice
Shostakovich's compassion & understanding of the flawed human soul runs through all his music like a golden thread. I just pray someone like him is running the universe.
I cannot believe that he doesn't wear glasses! It should be impossible to read the text without glasses in his age...
This is so astonishingly awful ... but it _is_ hilarious how little he gives a shit, which seems to be the main value in this video.
I did a post of this to the piano sub at Reddit and it got 3 upvotes. A user gave an award as well. I hope Peter doesn't mind that I did that.
Such a brooding meditation. Captures the spirit of the piece completely.
Discovered you through Reddit. Heart-rending perfection and soul in the music (and the thing of envy - your technique.) Hope to listen and learn more from you, Mr. Lemken.
25:10 The transition back into the main theme, out of the darkness, this it where it gets me. Shostakovich was so awesome in those transitions. Something related is the return into the main theme in Sym 5/1, where he pitches all violins up to go to that key. Shostakovich was the best composer of the 20th century, I hope one day there is a successor.
Absolutely stunning

Great piece!
Very interesting interpretation in Chopin. I loved the way he considered the entire opus as a whole, tying the preludes together when necessary

Any news about it?
I'm completely confused by this one. Skipped over it, but cannot find mvmts 3 and 4. But still it's 50 minutes.???
Yes, because the first two movements are doubled, unfortunately. I wish Peter Lemken could correct this.
nice👍😎
Not only is the performance superior, but the camera work is a symphony in and of itself. Beautifully filmed.
The zoomout at the end is well chosen.
A more introverted and sophisticated work than the first concerto. A work for the connoisseur. For grownups.
37:20 trumpeter looks like Manfred honeck
One of the best "Gaspard" I have heard from him. Pianists play "Scarbo" faster nowadays to show their virtuosity.
天空の城ラピュタの翌年なんだよねこの演奏
I like the doubling of the bass in the ultimate chord.
Just listened to this performance for the first time. Good job of you to catch that detail at the end. I think the 'doubling' of the final Bb notes in the left hand is actually a call-back to the jump in the left hand (low Bb up to the Bb triad in 2nd inversion) at the very start of the piece! Viewed in that light, it wouldn't be like a traditional 'doubling" (as pianists sometimes do to create a bigger sound). It's a motivic, compositional device, befitting the unique and "composer-centric" approach Rzewski takes to this repertoire.
Awesome!
Dear Mr. Lemken. I am contacting you to ask if you can provide me with some more information about this piano. I recently bought a 1897 Bösendorfer concert grand (260cm long, 92 keys) and i'm in search for information about this model. May i have your email address to send you some pics and details? Regards from Italy.
Perhaps the worst canera angle in recorded history..... At least, the music comes through.
It was the best I could do at this point, very improvised. Audio comes from a pair of tiny dynamic capsules taped to the stage floor and the camera audio added as ambient sound. His Frankfurt performance was a lot better, unfortunately I cut his head off in that video. Fred laughed at it, but he was happy with the piano and the audio.
The beginning of Wilde Jagd feels so WILD, like a hunt. I love how he stops the chords, like firing from a rifle. It feels also like a hunt horn.
МИСТЕРИА ! MYSTERY ! მისტერია! ❤

thank you for sharing this beautiful symphony and the wonderful interpretation
